1 Corinthians 10:13

13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Have you ever heard anyone say something like, “God will never put more on you than you can handle.”? They firmly believe that this is a Biblical truth, but they fail to look at the context and wording of the passage that supposedly supports their position. It is the passage before us. The idea is not that you will never be faced with more than you can handle. The idea is that you will never face a temptation that cannot be resisted. I believe that Scripture teaches us that we will inevitably have times when life is too much for us. This is when we hopefully turn to God for help and strength. It is only with His divine help and guidance that we can make it through any given situation in life. This is the reason that Paul would write in Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” When you look at what he has said in the previous verses, you understand that he is telling the Philippians he has learned that it is only through the strength of God he has made it through the tough times, most of which were brought upon him because of his ministry and zeal for the gospel of Christ. Even in the often-misquoted verse above, we understand that “HE will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” That simple little pronoun helps us understand that it is only through the help of the Lord that we can face any and every temptation and persevere. I don’t know about you, but I see a pattern forming and it gives us this precedence…When life gets too much for us to bear, God is there to help us through it all. He will give us exactly what we need to persevere and stand firm in our faith. What an encouraging thought for today…and every day!

Father God, thank you for all of the wonderful promises we receive in your Word. May we take them to heart and lean upon you for your strength and direction at all times, particularly when it seems the world has got the upper hand. I can rest assured that you will neither leave nor forsake me for I am one of your children. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
