1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Let’s add one more to our list of characteristics of true godly love today. It is not rude! This brings up so many memories of others who have been rude to me over the years. I was at a fast-food restaurant one time and the lady behind the counter was exceptionally rude. She was on the telephone with someone, presumably her husband or boyfriend, and they were having a fight right there in the store/restaurant. I was the next in line with several others behind me, yet she just kept fighting with an occasional glance our way. At one point she looked at me and yelled, “Well, you are just going to have to wait!” She then continued her tirade with the person on the phone. Now, I’m normally pretty easy going…but I had to talk to the manager immediately! For some reason I never saw her working at that restaurant again. We all come into contact with people who are downright rude from time to time. They are obviously ignoring God’s command to love others, but how do WE react? What is our normal reaction to others who are rude to us? Do we “fight fire with fire,” so to speak? Or do we reveal God’s brand of love to even the rudest of people? What we should do is obvious.

Father God, once again I ask for the ability to love others even when they aren’t particularly loveable. Even when others are rude to me, may your love be evident in my words and actions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
