1 Corinthians 13:4

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Envy can certainly get the best of us at times. We so often look next door at the Jones’s and see something that they have, and we envy them for having it. We want it too! Even if we don’t need it. Or they might seem to be perfectly happy and have it all together, and you may envy them for that as well. Whatever the case, we might allow this enviousness to get out of hand and turn into the sin of covetousness. The Ten Commandments rightly warn us not to covet…

Exodus 20:17

17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Even though we are no longer the Old Covenant, coveting is still a sin. It is still wrong to set your heart’s desire on what your neighbor, friend, or relative might have. Love does not envy, and it certainly doesn’t covet. We should love others enough to want what’s best for them rather than envy them for what they have. The only thing we should truly be envious of is a closer walk with the Lord! Let that be our heart’s desire and God’s brand of love will be in our hearts, keeping us from the sin of envy.

Father God, pour into my heart your unconditional, intentional love for all people. Keep me from envying others for what they have. May I instead praise you for all of the blessings in my life as I take inventory of all that you have given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
